The Association of Professional tennis Players (or Association of Tennis Professionals in English) was created in 1972 by a handful of professional tennis players. The following year, the association begins to set up the ranking of professional players that is commonly called the ATP Ranking. Its female equivalent is the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). Nowadays, the association oversees all the largest professional tournaments in the men's category under the name ATP World Tour.

The ATP World Tour is therefore composed of tournaments of several categories. Each of them are characterized by endowments and winnings converted into specific points. The main circuit calendar, which does not include the Challengers and Futures, ends the last week of October. We then find for three weeks, the year-end Masters as well as the Davis Cup final. During these same three weeks, several Challenger tournaments take place in parallel, then the Challenger Masters during the last week of November. The Futures tournaments, on the other hand, continue during the first three weeks of December, then stop momentarily during the last week of the year. It is also important to note that the Olympic Games also participate in the ATP and WTA rankings, although the competition takes place every four years. The points acquired by the players during the event are effective for 1 year. It is also important to note that the latter have been revised upwards since the 2008 Olympic Games. Thus, a gold medal is now worth 750 points in the ATP ranking and 685 points in the WTA ranking.
