General culture item

The Alpine Skiing World Cup is an international ski competition organized every year by the International Ski Federation (FIS), and has been since 1967. This competition differs from the Winter Olympic Games or the alpine skiing world championships because it rewards skiers over the entire season, and not on a single race.

We owe the creation of this special alpine skiing World Cup to the Frenchman Serge Lang, reporter for the French sports daily l'Équipe. The competition has since been organized every year since January 05, 1967. If the majority of the events are organized in Europe, others also take place on the North American and Asian continent. For example, races have been organized in Argentina, Australia or New Zealand.

During the Alpine Skiing World Cup, the five usual disciplines (downhill, slalom, giant, Super-G and combined) are represented in an equal number of races, with the exception of the combined event. At the end of each event, the first 30 competitors receive a number of points ranging from 1 to 100. In addition, the overall winner of the World Cup and the winners of each discipline (with the exception of the combined since 2011) receive a crystal globe designed by Joska from Bodenmais, a company based in Zwiesel in southern Germany.

Prognosis

The skiers who hold the record for the number of awards won are the Swede Ingemar, with 86 victories to his credit, and the American Lindsey Vonn on the women's side who totals almost 75 victories. The Austrian Hermann Maier trails the Swede with almost 54 victories. Then comes the Italian Alberto Tomba with his 50 victories. On the women's side, we also find an Austrian on the second step of the podium in the person of Annemarie Moser-Pröll who managed to win 62 victories. Then comes the Swiss Vreni Schneider and her 55 victories on the counter.

As for the country classification, the Austrians are squatting on the first step of the podium for both men and women. We then find Switzerland and Italy on the men's side respectively ranked in 2nd and 3rd position and the same nations, but with the reverse ranking, for women. Nevertheless, Canada does not have to be ashamed of its performances since it appears in 8th place in the ranking. But the women illustrate themselves more during the competition by reaching the 7th place in the same ranking. We are therefore looking forward to the Alpine Skiing World Cup again this year to see if the Canadians will prove themselves enough to take their place again!
